The Victorian Association for the Teaching of English is a professional body established to promote the interests of English education and to allow English educators in Victoria to exchange ideas. It brings together teachers in government, Catholic and independent schools, as well as tertiary educators and pre-service teachers.

How ya goin'? Believe it or not, Australia is the only country in the world in which this question does not constitute an enquiry about transport choices. Australians know that the question asks about our current health, our state of mind, our general condition. We answer, 'Fine', or less grammatically, 'Good', and move on. In 2014, though, VATE is probing beneath the clichés. How are we travelling? Moving, cruising, strolling, struggling, sinking? That's what we're investigating.
In 2014, looking forward to 2015 and the ongoing changes facing us as English teachers, facing our students, and facing the nation itself, it's time to take stock, to find 'where we are at', who we are, where we've been and where we're going; in fact, to examine how we are travelling. Perhaps it's time to take a 'selfie'.

Now in its fourth year, this prize honours the memory of Emeritus Professor Michael Clyne, one of Australia's most distinguished linguists and a founding supporter of the VCE English Language course. All students currently enrolled in Units 3-4 VCE English Language (and aged 19 years and younger) are invited to participate in this year's Clyne Prize for VCE English Language.
