.Description:

The new draft Australian Curriculum (May, 2010) makes the role of literacy learning more explicit than ever before, both in subject English and across the curriculum. Yet many secondary teachers still feel ill-equipped to support their students in the literacy demands of the English curriculum, never mind the literacy demands of other subject areas. This program will provide support for English teachers and Literacy coordinators to address the requirements of the new curriculum. It is an intensive teacher education program, jointly run by VATE and the University of Melbourne, that supports English/Literacy teachers to support the literacy needs of diverse groups of students. The program is made up of 18 hours of face-to-face teaching, a 6-hour online component and a classroom-based case study investigating the literacy needs of specific learners and resources to support them.

By the end of the program, participants will have an extensive range of resources for supporting the Literacy needs of their students, including readily available online resources. They will also learn from each other through the online forums and through presentations of their case studies to the group in the final week. Those seeking University accreditation for this course would undertake two formal assessment requirements: a written discussion of 4 theoretical readings that have informed their practice; and a written version of their case study.
