How to get involved

VATE employs a number of staff who are managed by a senior employee of the office staff, the Executive Education Officer.

The Curriculum Committee

provides a forum where all members, individual and institutional, are enabled to:

  • discuss issues in curriculum development and change;
  • disseminate information, critique policies and/or resources related to curriculum and assessment in secondary English;
  • discuss VATE’s position on curriculum and assessment issues, formulating where appropriate VATE discussion papers for use by VATE Council in its advocacy role;
  • engage with the membership through developing surveys on issues of curriculum and assessment;
  • prepare discussion papers on issues of policy and practice for circulation to the membership;
  • develop member forums on issues pertinent to curriculum and assessment;
  • report to VATE Council, to assist with informing its decisions and to support its role as advocate for educators.

The Professional Learning and Research Committee

recognises that VATE is a collaborative professional learning community which brings educators together in a variety of local, state, national and international contexts. VATE seeks to:

  • Promote opportunities through networks to foster critical, creative, collaborative, and reflective thinking about what we do and know as teachers of English;
  • Initiate research, publishing and dissemination of quality publications based on exemplary teaching, learning and research;
  • Initiate forums on issues which affect the professional identity of English educators;
  • Develop policy around VATE professional learning which can provide guidelines about the kinds of professional development which are acceptable to the association and the criteria for feedback for presenters.
