Preparing for reading and comparing Years 9-11

NGV - Preparing for reading and comparing Years 9-11
Description

Tuesday 7 May 9.15am - 3.30pm

MORNING SESSION
In conjunction with VATE, NGV Learn is offering teachers a Professional Learning Day that will help prepare students for Reading and Comparing in VCE. Teachers will explore works of art in the NGV collection that Educators have paired together for similar ideas, issues or themes. In a facilitated Gallery session, participants will analyse the textual/visual features of each work of art, exploring how each artwork reflects ideas about the world and the human experience. A variety of writing resources that can be used in the English classroom to support a comparative text study will be provided.

AFTERNOON SESSION
Briony Schroor will explore the implications of comparison in the classroom, suggesting approaches to teaching students how to compare, and considering different ways of encouraging students to write about their findings. Her presentation will allow opportunity for professional discussion, as well as participation in workshop style activities designed to be used in lessons.
Briony completed a PhD in feminist theory and classical Greek literature, and then commenced a career teaching Literature and English in secondary schools in England and Australia. She has now been teaching for nineteen years and she is currently the Leader of the English Domain at Nossal High School, an academically selective high school in Melbourne’s South Eastern suburbs.
