Creating micro stories: Small fiction with big impact!

Erika Boas and Emma Jenkins

Micro stories are quick-paced and enjoyable; they fulfil a reader’s desire for brevity but simultaneously can carry intellectual weight, wit and insight. In this publication, the authors consider stories of 1000 words or less and the elements of effective writing and writing instruction. The stories have been written by students, teachers and published authors and all feature attention to the author’s craft. The stories are presented as ‘mentor texts’ for use in the writing classroom to ignite the imagination and inspire our students. Micro stories might just be the way to engage the reluctant writer, just as they could pose the necessary challenge for the student who never quite knows when to stop writing or how to finish their story!
